  17. <p>     As investigators probe the wreckage of the Robert Maxwell
  18. empire, the mess just gets uglier. British investigators believe
  19. that the late media mogul looted some $1.5 billion from the
  20. pension funds and coffers of public companies under his control,
  21. about twice the original estimate. Auditors also found that
  22. debts owed by Maxwell's private companies exceed $3.3 billion,
  23. up $830 million from earlier estimates, and that Maxwell
  24. allegedly schemed to bolster the stock price of one of his
  25. companies by illegally paying investors to buy shares.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     The spotlight now is on Maxwell's sons. Last week a
  28. British judge revoked Kevin and Ian Maxwell's passports and
  29. froze up to $813 million of Kevin's assets after the disclosure
  30. of his "substantial" involvement in questionable transfers of
  31. pension assets.
